Shared Hosting vs Cloud Hosting

Written to help you decide, including where the other option is genuinely better.

Shared hosting or cloud hosting?

Shared hosting puts many sites on one server at low cost, with performance affected by other tenants and limited control. Cloud hosting gives dedicated resources, scaling and control at higher cost and with more administration. For a small brochure site shared hosting is usually adequate; for a store or an application it rarely is.

Choose Shared hosting if…

  • A small site with modest traffic
  • Cost is the binding constraint
  • No technical capacity for server management
  • Performance requirements are undemanding

Choose Cloud hosting if…

  • Running a store or an application
  • Traffic is significant or spiky
  • You need specific server configuration
  • Predictable performance matters commercially
Worth saying plainly: Slow server response is often the real cause behind speed complaints that people try to fix with caching plugins. Check server response time before buying optimisation work.

Questions people ask about this decision

For a very small catalogue and low traffic, sometimes. Stores generate database load that shared plans handle poorly, so it becomes a ceiling quickly.

Cloud infrastructure with the provider handling server administration, updates and backups. It costs more than raw cloud and removes the administration burden.

Measure server response time — time to first byte. If that is consistently slow before any content is sent, the host or the application is the bottleneck, not your images.
