What Is AEO (Answer Engine Optimisation)?

What answer engine optimisation means in practice, and what it cannot promise.

What is AEO?

AEO, or answer engine optimisation, is structuring content so systems that generate answers — AI assistants, AI overviews in search, voice assistants — can understand it, extract the relevant part accurately and cite the source. It emphasises direct answers, factual precision, clear authorship and accurate structured data over keyword-focused writing.

As more searches are answered on the results page rather than by a click, being understandable to the system assembling that answer becomes a distinct objective. AEO is the practice built around that, and it is largely a content discipline.

How is AEO different from SEO?

SEO aims to rank a page so someone clicks it. AEO aims for the content to be understood, extracted and cited by a system generating an answer. The technical foundations overlap almost entirely; what differs is the emphasis on clear, self-contained, verifiable answers.

In practice AEO is not a replacement discipline. It is a set of content and structure standards applied on top of ordinary technical and content SEO.

What makes content easy for AI to use?

A concise, self-contained answer near the top of the page. Specific, checkable facts rather than generalities. Question-shaped headings. Clear authorship, organisation and dates. Accurate structured data matching visible content. And something genuinely original — first-hand experience or real examples.

Content that merely restates what dozens of other pages already say gives an answer engine no reason to prefer it as a source.

Can you guarantee being cited in AI answers?

No. Nobody controls what these systems cite, and any service claiming otherwise is overselling. What is within your control is publishing content that is precise, clearly attributed and easy to interpret correctly, which is what these systems appear to favour.

This uncertainty is a reason to prefer practices that also serve human readers, since those retain value regardless of how AI systems evolve.

Does AEO require structured data?

It helps machines interpret a page correctly, so accurate schema is worth implementing. It is not a substitute for content that answers the question clearly, and schema describing things not on the page is a problem rather than an advantage.

Use FAQ markup only for genuine questions and answers visible on the page. Adding FAQ sections everywhere purely to emit markup produces padding that serves nobody.

Should every page have a direct answer block?

Every page that answers a question should, near the top, in forty to eighty words that stand alone without the surrounding context. Pages that exist to sell rather than to explain do not need one, though a clear opening statement of what is offered serves a similar purpose.

The test for a good answer block is whether it would still make sense if someone quoted it with no other part of the page.
