What Is SEO? A Straightforward Explanation
What search optimisation actually involves, what it can achieve, and what nobody can promise.
What is SEO?
SEO, or search engine optimisation, is the work of making a website more likely to appear when people search for what it offers. It has three parts: technical health so pages can be crawled and indexed, content that answers what searchers are asking, and credibility signals such as links and consistent business information. Results build over months.
SEO is surrounded by more misinformation than most marketing disciplines, partly because results are slow and hard to attribute, which makes overclaiming easy. This is what it actually consists of.
How does SEO actually work?
Search engines crawl pages, render them, decide what each is about, and rank them for queries based on relevance, quality signals and the site's overall credibility. SEO work addresses each stage: making pages crawlable and renderable, making their subject clear, and making the site worth trusting.
Most sites that do not rank fail at one of two points: pages that cannot be indexed properly, or pages that exist but say nothing worth ranking.
How long does SEO take?
Technical fixes can show in weeks. Content and authority gains typically take three to six months to become clear, and competitive terms take longer. Anyone promising rankings in weeks is either targeting terms nobody searches or is not being straight with you.
The timeline depends heavily on your starting point. A site with technical problems blocking indexing can improve quickly once those are fixed, because the content was always there.
Can anyone guarantee a number one ranking?
No. Search rankings depend on factors outside any agency's control, including competitors' actions and algorithm changes. What can honestly be committed to is defined work, transparent measurement and regular reporting. A ranking guarantee is a signal to look elsewhere.
Some guarantees are technically met by ranking for terms so specific that nobody searches them. Ask what terms any guarantee covers and check their search volume.
What is the difference between on-page, technical and off-page SEO?
On-page covers content, titles, headings and internal links on your pages. Technical covers crawling, indexing, rendering, speed and structured data. Off-page covers signals from elsewhere — links, mentions and consistent business information. All three matter and neglecting one limits the others.
For most small and mid-sized businesses, on-page and technical work produce the larger early gains, because that is where the fixable problems usually are.
Is SEO still worth it with AI search?
Yes. AI answers are assembled from indexed content, so being crawlable, clear and credible still matters — arguably more, because being citable is now a distinct goal. What changes is that a ranking position alone is worth less than it was, and clear extractable answers are worth more.
The practices that make content useful to AI systems — direct answers, factual precision, clear authorship, accurate structured data — are the same ones that serve human readers well.
