What Is Digital Marketing?

The channels, what each is good for, and how to choose between them with a limited budget.

What is digital marketing?

Digital marketing covers the channels a business uses to reach customers online — search, paid advertising, social media, email and content. Effective digital marketing is usually less about using every channel and more about choosing the two or three that suit your customers, measuring them properly, and improving them over time.

The channel list is short and well known. What separates results is choosing deliberately, measuring honestly, and sustaining effort long enough to learn something.

Which channels should a business use?

Start with where customers already look. For services people actively search for, search — organic and paid — is usually first. For visual and discovery-led products, social often is. Email matters wherever there is repeat purchase or a long consideration period.

The wrong approach is starting with the channel list and asking which to use. Start with how your customers currently find suppliers like you.

How much budget is needed?

Enough for one channel to produce readable data. A budget spread across five channels typically generates five samples too small to learn from. Concentrate until one channel works, then expand from a position of knowing something.

For paid channels, work back from the number of conversions you need monthly to make decisions — usually at least a few dozen per campaign.

What should be measured?

Enquiries and their cost, not impressions and clicks. That means tracking form submissions, phone calls, WhatsApp messages and email clicks as conversions, and where possible feeding back which enquiries became customers.

In many Indian service categories calls outnumber form submissions considerably. Untracked calls make channels that drive them look unprofitable and get them cut wrongly.

How long before results appear?

Paid channels produce data within weeks, though optimising takes longer. Organic search and content take months. Plan the mix around how urgently enquiries are needed, and do not judge slow channels on fast timelines.

A common and expensive mistake is cancelling content or SEO work at month three, which is usually just before it would have started showing.

Do I need to be on every social platform?

No. One or two platforms maintained properly outperform five neglected profiles, which actively damage credibility. Choose where your customers are and where you can sustain output.

An abandoned profile with a two-year-old last post is worse than no profile, because people check and draw conclusions.
