What Is a Google Business Profile?

What the listing is, what it controls, and how to set it up correctly.

What is a Google Business Profile?

A Google Business Profile is the free listing that shows a business in Google Search and Maps, displaying name, category, address or service area, hours, phone, website, photographs and reviews. For local businesses it frequently produces more enquiries than the website itself, through calls, direction requests and messages.

It is the single highest-return free asset most local businesses have, and also the one most often set up once and never revisited.

How do I set one up correctly?

Claim and verify the listing, choose the most accurate primary category, add relevant secondary categories, list your services, set accurate hours including holidays, define your service area if you travel to customers, and add genuine current photographs.

Primary category has a large effect on which searches you appear for and is frequently set too broadly at setup. Revisit it against what customers actually search.

Can I list a business without a shopfront?

Yes — a service-area business can hide its address and specify the areas it covers. What is not permitted is listing an address you do not operate from, including virtual offices or mail-forwarding addresses used solely to obtain a listing.

Listings with fake addresses are regularly removed, sometimes after operating for a long time, and the loss of an established listing with its reviews is significant.

How do I get more reviews?

Ask at the moment of satisfaction, make it one tap with a direct link, and respond to every review including the critical ones. A consistent routine produces far more than occasional campaigns.

Never buy reviews or offer incentives for positive ones. Both breach platform policy and purchased reviews are increasingly detected and removed.

What affects how the listing ranks?

Google cites relevance to the search, distance from the searcher, and prominence of the business. Distance cannot be changed, so effort goes to relevance — accurate categories, services and information — and prominence, built largely through reviews and web presence.

This is why no business ranks everywhere in a city from a single location, and why coverage claims beyond your actual area do not help.

Do posts and updates help?

Their effect on ranking appears limited. They help conversion by showing the business is active, which matters when someone compares two listings side by side. Keeping hours, photographs and services accurate matters considerably more.

If capacity is limited, prioritise accuracy and reviews over posting frequency.
