What Is Local SEO and How Does It Work?
How map results are decided, and what a local business can actually influence.
What is local SEO?
Local SEO is the work of appearing in map results and location-based searches. It depends mainly on your Google Business Profile, consistent business information across the web, genuine reviews, and location-relevant content on your website. For businesses serving a defined area, it usually produces the highest-intent enquiries available.
Local search works differently from general search. Proximity and listing quality carry weight that no amount of website content can substitute for, which is why a small business with a complete profile can outrank a large one without.
How does Google decide local rankings?
Google describes three factors: relevance, meaning how well your listing matches the search; distance, meaning how close you are to the searcher; and prominence, meaning how well known and well reviewed the business is. Distance is not something you can change, which makes the other two where effort goes.
This is why a business cannot rank everywhere in a city from one location, and why claiming addresses you do not operate from is both against the guidelines and ultimately ineffective.
What is the most important local SEO factor you control?
The Google Business Profile itself — claimed, correctly categorised, with complete services, accurate hours, a defined service area and genuine photographs. Category selection in particular has a large effect and is frequently set wrongly at setup and never revisited.
Review the primary category against what customers actually search for. A business listed under a broad category often loses to competitors listed under the specific one.
How important are reviews?
Considerably, for both ranking and for whether someone chooses you after seeing the listing. Recency matters as much as the average score, and responses matter too. A business with recent reviews and thoughtful replies reads as active and attentive.
Never buy reviews. Beyond being against platform policy and unfair to customers, purchased reviews are increasingly detected and removed, sometimes along with the listing.
Do I need a page for every city I serve?
Only where you have genuinely distinct, useful information about that place — real coverage details, local context, specific projects, relevant FAQs. Pages that swap the city name and change nothing else are doorway pages, and they carry risk rather than benefit.
A better approach for most service-area businesses is one strong page per service plus an accurate service area on the Business Profile, which captures nearby searches that contain no city name at all.
Can a business without a shopfront do local SEO?
Yes. A service-area business can hide its address and define the areas it covers. What is not permitted is listing an address you do not operate from, including virtual offices and mail-forwarding addresses used solely for listings.
Service-area businesses often find it takes longer to establish prominence because there is no physical location anchoring proximity, which makes reviews and content relatively more important.
