What Is GEO (Generative Engine Optimisation)?

How brands are represented in generative search, and what can honestly be influenced.

What is GEO?

GEO, or generative engine optimisation, is improving how a brand and its content are represented in generative search systems and AI assistants. It overlaps with AEO but emphasises entity consistency across sources, explicit statement of basic facts, and publishing genuinely distinctive information rather than restating common knowledge.

Generative systems assemble answers from many sources rather than ranking one page. That changes what influence looks like: consistency across everywhere you appear matters more than optimisation of any single page.

How is GEO different from AEO?

AEO focuses on structuring individual pages so they can be extracted and cited. GEO focuses on how your organisation as an entity is described across the sources these systems draw on — your site, directories, profiles and third-party mentions. They are complementary rather than competing.

In practice the same work often serves both, which is why the distinction matters less than the underlying discipline of consistency and substance.

Why do AI systems describe my business wrongly?

Usually because sources disagree. If your website, directory listings, social profiles and third-party mentions describe the business differently, a system assembling an answer has to pick, and it may pick the outdated or incorrect version.

The fix is unglamorous: audit where your business is described, and make the core facts identical everywhere. Correcting the sources is the only reliable route.

Can I control what AI says about my business?

Not directly. You control what you publish and what external sources say where you can influence them. Systems decide what to use. Attempts to manipulate these systems through prompt-style content in pages do not work reliably and are not worth the risk.

Monitoring matters: periodically ask major assistants about your business and category, and treat wrong answers as a signal to fix the underlying sources.

What actually helps?

Stating fundamentals explicitly — what the organisation does, where it operates, who it serves. Keeping those identical across every profile and listing. Publishing material with genuine first-hand substance. Accurate organisation structured data. And correcting third-party listings that contradict your site.

Explicit statement matters more than it sounds. Facts that are obvious to a human reader from context may not be extractable as statements about the entity.

Is GEO worth investing in now?

The consistency and original-content work is worth doing regardless, because it serves conventional search and human readers too. Speculative techniques aimed specifically at generative systems are not, because the field is young and the claims are largely untested.

A reasonable position is to do the defensible work thoroughly and treat anything claiming guaranteed generative visibility with scepticism.
